How can you become involved with Rescue Wooden Boats?
- Become a Bessie Benefactor! Be part of 1935 Whelker Bessie's story by supporting her restoration. With her own intriguing Dunkirk history, Bessie is our current restoration project and will be used afloat once she's seaworthy again. If you're interested in directly supporting Bessie's restoration and would like to find out more, please contact us
- Become a Friend and support our work through donations - you will be kept up to date through our newsletter and invited to events.
- Join the Maritime Heritage Centre team to welcome and guide visitors round the centre and the boatyard at weekends - no experience needed, training is given. (To see the volunteers rotas you need simple log on details - we will explain it to you! - do contact us)
- We are open from April 3 until the end of October from 11am-4pm on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays.
- If we have more volunteers we can open on Saturdays too! Do join the team and bring your friends!
- Join the Education team to welcome and assist school and adult groups during the week - no experience needed, training given
- We have a well-equipped Education Room in the Maritime Heritage Centre, with teaching resource packs on Lucy Lavers' story available for schools - come and see!
- There are occasional working parties on the boats, scraping, sanding and painting. Let us know if you would like to join the team.

Help with Special Events - publicity; fundraising; stewarding display stands and merchandise stall, and guiding visitors as part of the event team on the day.
